P

Back to 1983 FOR A DAY

Back to 1983 FOR A DAY

How did you communicate?
How did you get your news?
How did you entertain yourself?
What was the most difficult gadget you had to give up and why? What about the least difficult sacrifice.
Were there any surprises for you?

I took this assignment pretty serious. I even dressed up as someone would from the 80’s. So the night before I turned off all my cell phones, ipod, and laptop, and my tv. I know I wanted to take as much time doing an activity that doesn’t involve modern technology. So I cooked myself a massive breakfast and took my time to eat all of it. Then I washed the dishes and clean my room. I spent an hour rearranging my bedroom. I gave my dog a bath outside and played with my dog. Then I walked over to my friends house so we can go biking around our neighborhood. We rode over to downtown and talked to interesting people. I basically spent most of my day exercising and exploring the beauty of my city.

It was pretty easy not looking or using my phone. I only worried about getting lost or raped that I couldn’t call the police. I felt a little lost most of the day mainly because I had no internet so I couldn’t see any news updates. I couldn’t look at what the weather was going to like because I couldn’t watch the news on television. I was getting kind of fat and chunky so I dedicated most of the day to exercise and explore the world around me. My ipod and my laptop was the most difficult gadget to give up. Because I couldn’t live without any music in my life, and I couldn’t catch up with all my social networking sites. The whole was pretty easy and only at the end of the day I got a little bored and struggled a lot. It was a nice change of life but I much rather have modern technology with me.

Biome HW: Part 1

Freshwater: What then happens to the profundal zone?
Its just a lower layer in the bottom of the pond/lake/river that mostly contains alge and plankton that sinks down to the bottom. It rarely sees light due to the thick penetration.

Marine: How does such a wide variety of animals live in a reef?
Reefs are excellent grounds for a great variety of wildlife to breed and survive. Plants like coral and seagrasses allow organisms and fishes to thrive and provides shelter at the same time.

Desert: How exactly are deserts hostile?
It could be hostile to unprepared humans due the extremely high temperatures and lack of fresh water available. Extremely hot in the daytime and extreme cold during the night.

Forest: How do plants as old as 100 years old survive in forests?
Most forests are under conservation and being protected by wildlife officials Studies have shown forests must be 150 to 200 years old before the appearance of some species of lichens. Certain herbaceous plants require from 40 to 150 years to rejuvenate, and will never recover in a forest with a logging cycle of 100 years or less. Studies done on forests 90 years after a major event, such as a clear-cut, have found no evidence of the recovery of vernal herbs normally expected in the area. Many plants disperse at extremely slow rates, and once they are eliminated from an area, it may take thousands of years, and the right habitat, for them to return

Grassland: Frequent fires in grasslands?

Tundra: Due to global warming how would plants and wildfire learn to adapt in warmer temperatures?
It's likely that most of the wildlife would not survive and the vegetation would likely die out.

Writing Reflection

  • Explain one or more specific aspects of your writing that have improved this year. In this explanation, you must directly refer to at least two specific pieces of writing that you produced for this class. You may use any assignment, project, writing sample, draft, blog entry, etc. You should discuss the writing tips & strategies we studied, the processes & methods we used, the critiques & drafts we employed and the products we created (feel free to use these specific key terms to keep your reflection focused).
  • Describe one specific goal for your future writing. Your explanation of your goal(s) must include some or all of the following: writing samples from this year, writing strategies you have used in the past, writing strategies or techniques you would like to develop, examples from authors you respect, etc.
One aspect of my writing that has improved has been my use of connecting my writing to my audience. I improved in setting the scene, using statistics, and using character. In my Ampersand piece I used a statistic that doctors weren't allowed to wear ties because the neckties were carrying germs. I think its important that I've developed this skill because I personally like to read articles that I can relate to and be able to connect what the writer is trying to convey. And like in my Media Saves the Beach writing I was able to connect a big issue in the south bay to others.

A goal for my future writing would be implementing the loop in my writing more. Not just by putting it in the paragraphs but being creative and applying it to sentences too. This year we were introduced to the loop and next year I want to develop it.

Literary Reflection

Jay Gatsby as my best friend, and college event planner. During college I would need some release and to party, to have the full college experience that I've seen at movies and television. Jay would be my roommate, and when he's done with his classes he goes to the official board of parties to plan the various events the will occur in college.

Jay would supply all the alcohol to our parties. Not only will be my best friend he will also be my wing-man. Since Jay is excellent in stretching the truth, he'll help me lure girls to my heart. Jay is also well connected in the business world, I want to study to become a Doctor in college. Surely Jay Gatsby will invite people of high power in the business world, and me being his best friend, he hook me up with a person that'll help me set up my own medical office.

If I ever become unmotivated to go to my classes or decide to give up in my hopes and dreams, Jay's self motivation is definitely inspiring and his goals are clear and he sprints right toward him.

Historical Reflection

A historian that I would like to interact with in college would be Jose Rizal. I think Jose Rizal would be an excellent leader in my university because of his intelligence, and he was a man of peace. He was loyal to his native people and he had masses of people following him. Many admired his all around knowledge and ability. Being curious and inquisitive, he developed a rare facility of mastering varied subjects and occupations. Jose Rizal is known as the national hero of the Philippines. He was very popular with others, and was open mind.

Not only was he a great leader he was also a proclaimed author, who wrote two well known novels: Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. In college I'm interested in minoring in creative writing and it'll be convenient to ask him for advice and help on my writing.

Considering the condition of the Philippines during Jose's time (1861-1896) Jose was a very peaceful man but he was tired of the injustice that Spain had over the Philippines. Instead of grabbing a gun and letting hell loose, he opted to use the power of the pen to empower the people of the Philippines to overthrow the dictatorship of Spain. In the history of the Philippines, the country has experienced a tumultuous amount of experience of democracy and political corruption, popular "people movements" of overthrowing dictatorships governments. so Jose Rizal's arrival was timely. He expressed the growing national consciousness of many Filipinos who opposed Spanish colonial tyranny and aspired to attain democratic rights. Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt, Jose Rizal's best friend, who said "Rizal was the greatest product of the Philippines and his coming to the world was like the appearance of a rare comet, whose rare brilliance appears only every other century." Meeting and become friends with Jose Rizal is rare and him being talented in all areas of education is a rare gem.

College life will surely be draining and I would need some release and a good time. Jose Rizal was a citizen of the world, His extensive travels and multitude of friends in Europe, Middle East and Asia made him one. He not only traveled he learned and spoke over 20 foreign languages.

"Treat our aged parents as you would wish to be treated...Love them greatly in memory of me...30 December 1896." He loved his family. Presumingly I will spend most of my time at school and studying and away from my family. Hopefully the partying and friends won't stray me away from staying in contact with my family. His various acts of kindness leads me to believe that he was devoted to help people.

He once said that "That the youth is the hope of our future." Jose truly believed in the younger generation and wanted them to succeed in life. Because of all this Jose Rizal was a model student leader, Rizal opened up the conscience of every indio, labeled today as the Filipino. The nationalism that Rizal empowered has made them, the individuals, care about loving this nation. He formed movements to help the Filipinos fight for their liberaton. This includes La Liga Filipina. His novels brought awareness to the everyone about the situation in the Philippines. He died for the Philippines.

Post Trail Reflection

1. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the prosecution. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

2. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the defense. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

3. What was the most significant piece of evidence, in your personal opinion?

4. What was the most significant argument made, in your opinion?

5. What do you personally believe the correct verdict should be? Do you agree with the jury? Why or why not?

Then, in a final paragraph (or in a private email to me), complete the following:

Answers
1. In the prosecution side, they provided a lot of evidence and refereed to the constitution a lot, which I think they killed us with. Raul already stated that the author of SB 1070 Russell Pearce was a Neo Nazi, which the jury took in consideration. My defense side shouldn't have cross examined Raul, Lupe stood her ground and didn't allow us to get any "dirt". I liked how they went old school and brought back John Adams and James Madison, the founding fathers, to testify that Sb1070 contradicts the constitution.

2. What we did was bring in Jan Brewer, Russell Pearce, and Officer Kenneth Collins. Our arguments was that it was inhumane, economically wrong, and Sb1070 fits right in with current and previous laws. Jan Brewer stated that this bill was very popular. We also pointed out that Phoenix Arizona is the kidnapping capital of the nation, and 316 kipnapping cases were reported in 2009 alone. And other states like Pennsylvania introduced similar bills and asked Jan Brewer was this her intent when she signed.

3. When the prosecution brought up the constitution. I personally thought that that was the hay maker the killed us. When Calvin cross examined Jan Brewer and Russell Pearce they pointed out Amendment 6 and asked them both to read it out loud. It supported their case well and was a great piece of evidence.

4. When Raul came up to testify he pointed out that Russell Pearce was a Neo Nazi and that they brought both the founding fathers to testify that this bill contradicts the constitution.

5. I agree with the jury with their final verdict. When Calvin read his closing statement I actually felt guilty when he was reading it. He got us when he pointed out that the popular vote isn't always right.

I think I deserve a 45 out of 50 points because of the difficulty of the project and the short amount of time we had to formulate questions and finding relevant evidence to back up our questions. I did the following things very well: choosing our witnesses, finding evidence, learning SB1070, and dressing as a lawyer. I could have done a better job of preparing out witnesses for cross examination because thats where I think it hurt us, and preparing better follow up questions. Because in the cross examination the prosecution came hard and we weren't able to bounce back and get the last word out. I've learned that when the prosecution side came up weak in the 1 round and we were strong, they rebounded and came out full force to take it back. We shouldn't done a better job of staying consistent and not letting our guard down. Due to the level of difficulty and the amount of time we had, if only we had one day left I'm sure that we would've done much better and more prepared.

History

1. What are the most interesting aspects of World Wars 1 and 2?

The most interesting aspects of World War1 and 2 is the propaganda involved in both wars. They're both humorous and it accurately depicted the current situation.
2. What do you hope to learn about these wars?

3. How/Why are these wars important today? How do they impact and/or inform our world today? hint: think about alliances, democracies around the world, cultures, international institutions, nuclear (and other) technologies, etc.

Blog # 10

Do you believe that the Grapes of Wrath successfully establishes sympathy for the plight of Dust Bowl farmers? Why or why not?

I believe that the Grapes of Wrath successfully establishes sympathy for the plight of Dust Bowl farmers. Because it led many desperate farmers to migrate to California in search for a better life. The farmers just lost everything in the dust bowl and had to begin a new chapter in their lives rebuilding or migrating to new land.

Post a thoughtful reflection on how you have performed within the numerous freedoms associated with Ampersand. Then post a thoughtful reflection on how you have performed within the numerous structures associated with Ampersand.

During ampersand I think we had a lot of freedoms in writing what we want for the book. As managing editor I've seen many of my classmates topics for their writing and it gave me an insight of what the book might turn out to be.

My topic will be on neckties. It will be an editorial against wearing neckties.

Semester TWO, Blog #4

Post your personal goals, hopes and ambitions for your class' production & publication of this book.

My goals are to produce a reflective high quality piece of writing. I plan on writing a fiction short based on the lessons and themes that I've learned during internship. I want to apply my ever expanding creativity into my writing while still maintaining that clean, crisp, and elegant prose.

As for the whole class I want all of us to do well and hopefully everyone will look behind the surface to find the true meaning of our experience and depict it in our writing. Since a lot of people will be reading this book we need it to be as professional as can be and capture the attention of our audience

Mentor Interview

Sitting on an all black contemporary bar stool in a sauna like computer lab of a local Downtown school, Howard Chan sits as he always does: leaning back in his chair his legs wide apart, eyes straight ahead. Sometimes, he suddenly leans forward to emphasize a point, and he has a strange but angelic glow to him.

Mr. Chan is the Director of Educational Technology at KIPP Adelante Prepartory Academy. He currently teaches all the programs in the BET Design Center and maintains/supports the school technology infrastructure. Mr. Chan also provides training for teachers and advises instructional technology leaders on a national scale.

Prior to joining KIPP Adelante, Mr. Chan was the technology coordinator and classroom teacher for the Evergreen School District in San Jose. Before transitioning to a teaching career, Mr. Chan spent seven years in the engineering industry working for various high tech firms in the Silicon Valley. Mr. Chan’s educational background includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University, and a multiple subjects teaching credential and M.A. in Cross-Cultural Education from National University.

NM: What subject do you teach at Kipp?

HC: I teach 5th through 8th grade, I teach business course, engineering course, and technology here at the school.

NM: How did you discover the Kipp school system?

HC: I used EDJOIN it’s a website for me to find jobs in San Diego. I was living in the Bay Area looking for jobs in San Diego and Kipp looked like a great fit for me and checked out the website and followed through.

NM: So I here that you educate teachers and other adults about technology, are they harder to teach than students?

HC: Yes, Adults are harder to teach than students. Absolutely.

NM: Where do you teach them?

HC: So we have professional development days every two weeks and we meet once a month as a technology group to get some get professional development in technology integration.

NM: What is the hardest part of your job?

HC: Hardest part of my job is balancing work and personal life.

NM: I’ve seen a picture with you and our California Governor (Arnold Schwarzenegger) how was it like meeting him?

HC: When I first met him he really looks like a wax doll, he had a lot of make up on. Because he was doing his speech live that day. He’s a nice guy, intimidating, big fella and actually nice guy and asked some pretty good questions when he came to my lab.

NM: So I follow you on twitter and your tweets are very informational. So how do you use it?

HC: Most people today associate twitter to a personal, entertainment application. Where I use it as a professional tool and my tweets are professional and I connect with other educational technology, professionals, engineers, IT professionals, and other technologists who tweet about related to technology, IT, edtech, and other instructional technologies. It allows you to connect with a bigger network of people who have expertise in knowledge, resource, and experience with integrating technology in the classroom it helps me grow.

NM: So if you post a question do people reply to you?

HC: If you build enough of a network and you reciprocate information with each other, people tend to reply to you and you build a reputation on twitter. Being a guy that helps others and people tend to help you back.

NM: What accomplishment in your career to date are you most proud of?

HC: Marrying a loving wife and having two beautiful daughters.

NM: What are you most passionate about?

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5938445/eminem_the_rolling_stone_interview

In Eminem's interview the introduction was very well written, and the descriptive words make you feel like your in the room interviewing him. The editing of the interview gave the main point of the meaning and it still felt raw. The magazine source is very reliable so that makes the piece of writing professional.

http://www.complex.com/CELEBRITIES/Web-Exclusive/Lupe-Fiasco

In this interview the introduction is short, but it gives you a message. The questions flowed really well and was a whole coherent piece.

Post a written reflection in which you describe what makes a great final product when a journalist (or group of writers, editors, etc.) create an interview that is presented in the professional world. We know an interview needs good questions... but what else makes these great? What other elements of writing are used? How does the writer create a final product that is more than a transcript of a conversation? What makes these finished, professional pieces of journalism?

Internship # 14

Choice 2. Post three pictures that show a process at your internship—This could be drafting & revision, how something is done at your internship, how your project was developed, etc.

These were our drafts and blueprints for the lab and it was one of the first things we needed to do. Then once we got the sketches approved, we then made a digital version on a website called creately.

Internship # 13

I was also sick this day and I'll make it up.

Choice 3. Post three pictures represent what is most significant to your experience as an intern.

Internship #12

I was sick today so I'll catch up on this.

Part 1: Documenting collaboration

Post photos of collaboration at your workplace—this may be people working together or the result(s) of people working together.

Part 2: Writing about collaboration

In the course of one typical workday, how many different people do you directly work with? How many people are indirectly affected by your work.

Describe your direct collaboration with others—how does it go & how does it influence the work?

Describe your indirect impact on others through your work—there are probably many people you never actually see who are affected by your work. How does this happen? How does this influence your work?

Feel free to continue writing about collaboration. How might people work differently in your job in the future? How might different resources change the way we work? How might a different manager or mentor want people to work? How would you use collaboration if you were in charge?

Internship #11

Week Summary
So this week went pretty good. A lot of hard work and labor was involved. By today we had to finish placing all the computers into the tables and have them all programed and networked to all the other 36 computers and the master computer. There was a lot more hard work and heavy lifting than I've anticipated, I have definitely worked up some sweat. The teachers were very nice and admired our work ethic and project. The most memorable moment of the week was presenting our computer lab to the teachers during the staff meeting on Wednesday. It was exciting that the whole staff admired our work and gave us their full attention and loved having us there.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Internship # 10

First, post a picture that sums up your day (make sure you get permission for the pic!).

I didn't bring a camera. I will tomorrow.

Second, post a caption in which you use the pic to get into a discussion the following: What new questions has your internship inspired you to ask about our world? What has it made you wonder about? What are you moved to go out and do or learn about on your own time?

Third, post at least five possible questions that you'd like to ask your mentor (or other important coworker) in your upcoming interview. Your questions should be based on yesterday's blog post. If you did not do yesterday's blog post, then you should do it as background for this post.

How did you actively get into social networking?
How did it feel meeting California's Governor?
Do you find it difficult training other teachers harder than students?
How did you discover Kipp Adelante school system?
How do you think technology's going to advance in the next 5 years?

Internship #8

hoice A: What characteristics and qualities do you see in the people at your internship that you'd like to develop in yourself? Some of these qualities and characteristics could be creativity, empathy, risk-taking, ambitiousness, honesty, fairness, and so on. There are so many qualities and characteristics that people could have, so look around and think of a few good ones that you see in the people you work with.

or....

Choice B: What new appreciations (for who? of what?) have you gained through internship that you did not have before? How did you develop these appreciations?

I have a new appreciation for teachers, contractors, and engineers. Doing the mathematics on graph paper and doing various calculations before doing any other work. Doing math was probably the last thing I'll expect in my internship. But maybe at first I was intimidated by that obstacle and my mind went blank.

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Internship #4

What academic skills could you use on the job?
Professionalism skills that our teacher gave us a workshop on. It was really helpful for them toWhat forms of collaboration could you use in a project?
Me and my partner Eliseo will be collaborating in our project together.

1/12/2010

So today my partner Eliseo wasn't here, so I didn't have that extra hand I needed to lift bookshelves, which was on today's to-do list. The heavy bookshelves posed as a giant obstacle for me since the bookshelves were bigger than me. Since the bookshelves were really heavy I had to remove the bookshelves first wiggle the bookshelves around to the desired spot and put back the books. I had to do this is about 8 bookshelves and it was really tedious.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Internship # 3

My project for internship will be building a computer lab in the schools current cafe or its study area. I will be using my current technological skills and experience. This project was perfect for my skill set and I've been using programs like creately to draw blueprints of the design of the laboratory.

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Internship #2

What have you actively done to start off on the right note?

What I've done actively around my work site is constantly keeping myself busy with task I need to accomplish everyday. Me and my partner work rigorously and we communicate we each other to get our most creative ideas out.

What have you actively done to create interesting opportunities for yourself?
Communicating with others around my work site makes me feel more involved in my internship, and talking with the students makes me aware of out I'm working with.

What have you actively done to advance the interests of your mentor and/or site?

I've sent my mentor my digital portfolio and my blog. My mentor thought that it was awesome that I had access to all of these, and had me present both of them to his classes.

What can you do in the immediate future to improve yourself and your experience in the above areas?

What I can do in the immediate future to improve myself is to get more sleep at night. During midday I get really tired and groggy a few hours after I eat my lunch. It is important that I be alert and prepared the whole day.

Internship #1

Today i woke up 5:59 a.m. The night before I already picked out what I am going to wear and made sure it was business casual and professional. I walked over to my kitchen and prepared my healthy breakfast that will keep me going for the whole day. I had toast with nutella and a glass of milk. Brushed my teeth and shaved in the bathroom, and then I went to my room to dress up. I remember spending a good 6 minutes debating on which dress socks I would wear. The ones I choose were soft, black, and had a few dots designed on the side. I left home at 6:32 and hopped on inside my green Dodge Caravan. It took me roughly 12 minutes to arrive at my internship site at downtown 6th ave. When I parked my car I saw Lupe walking down the street arrive at the same site as me. When the doors to the school opened I was greeted by my mentor Mr. Howard Chan. He told that normal I would call him by his first name but since it's in a school environment I'll address him as Mr. Chan. He then gave me a brief tour of the school, while we were casually talking about what I would like to get out of this experience. We then walked down stairs into the computer lab, where I would be working at. He gave me a computer to check out what projects they already accomplished in past years in his website.
